Update: Initial Autopsy & Police Reports For Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan

Hey Everyone!
So the initial autopsy and police have been released. MTV is reporting that foul play does not appear to be a factor and that the initial autopsy reports have been declared inconclusive. A more thorough autopsy is being conducted but could take a few weeks before the results are known.

Since the news broke of the death, fans have taken to the internet to memorialize the drummer. Many remembering the way he played with such passion and vigor, the way he inspired them to pick up their own sticks and give it a go. Industry friends have also shared their memories through Twitter. Popular groups like My Chemical Romance, Buckcherry, God Forbid, Shadows Fall and Papa Roach have all taken the time to reflect on the drummer's passing and send their regards to his family, friends, and the band.

If one thing is certain, fans and friends alike will never forget Jimmy. In his (fairly) short career, he was able to breathe life into the art of drumming. Watching him play, it was easy to see that he ranked up there with the best of the generation. He played with flair, with ease. It was just pure passion. Its sad to know he's gone at such a young age, especially from "natural causes" as they seem to expect. Is it just me or does it seem COMPLETELY UNNATURAL to die that young? Its really sobering. He was discovered dead in his Huntington Beach home Monday, December 28. Jimmy Sullivan is survived by his wife, and will forever be remembered by his fans and friends for his talent and his good nature. Rest In Peace Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. We'll never forget you.

RIP- Jimmy "The Reverend" Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold Found Dead

Hey Everyone!
I know I'm supposed to be taking a break from this blog, but I couldn't resist posting this when I heard the news. Earlier today, CNN and Avenged Sevenfold's official website confirmed that 28 year old drummer, Jimmy "The Reverend" Sullivan, was found dead in his home.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Jimmy you are forever in our hearts. We love you.

M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ

I'm in complete shock right now, it just seems that the year couldn't end without taking another young, promising life. I mean, we lost Michael JacksonBrittany Murphy, DJ AM, Patrick Swayze, and more, now this? It's insane. Never has the entertainment industry lost so many young artists in one year. Thats my opinion anyways.

Avenged Sevenfold is a band I've liked since my early years of high school. Their music is amazing... very heavy, very passionate and very intricate. These guys are no three chord punk band. I saw them play here in London a few years back, and it was phenomenal. Every member brings a critical element of musicianship to this band, I dont know how they're going to go on without The Reverend... He also played in a side project called Pinkly Smooth, with A7X lead vocalist Matt Sanders (aka M.Shadows). The Rev's past indulgences in drug culture are not much of a secret. Songs like Afterlife, were written by the late drummer and reflect on his struggles. Jimmy is said to have been clean for quite some time now, and I'm really hoping that drugs have no part in his death. It would only make the news even more tragic to know that this could have been avoided...

As for Jimmy, he is survived by his wife Leana MacFadden. An investigation is underway as to the cause of his death. CNN has stated that he was simply found unresponsive at home. These are still early reports, I'm sure more news will follow soon. I'll definitely update when I hear more. Stay posted. And to all his fans, family, and friends... this is truly tragic and shocking. The world has truly lost yet another talented young member of the entertainment community.

Rest In Peace, Jimmy... we'll miss you.

Song of the Day: Seize The Day by Avenged Sevenfold... Even though this song is about a lost lover, this song's message is so fitting of the loss. I'm sure it reflects how a lot of people are feeling in response to this news. The lyrics are almost haunting now... "Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost, It's empty and cold without you here, Too many people to ache over.... I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time, But I'm too young to worry, A meoldy, A memory, Or just one picture..."

Taking A Break

Hey Everyone!
So I know I said that as soon as exams were out and the holidays began, I'd be writing a lot more. But with the hours at work and the family plans, I feel like its probably best if I just take a holiday from everything- including the blog. Just until things calm down. Maybe a week/week and a half? Nothing crazy, I PROMISE I will be back to write more news stories for you asap! Just need a bit of time to unwind, it is my vacation time after all! Well, thanks for keeping up and I'll be back before you know it! In the mean time, enjoy this video... which is how I'm feeling right about now with all the holiday madness ahaha.

Top Ten Of The Decade: Who Makes Your List?

Hey Everyone!
Its that time of year again, when magazines and media outlets all start coming out with their "top songs/albums/concerts/etc of the year" lists. This year also marks a new decade, meaning most lists encompass the past ten years and are substantially more important to the reader than usual. Its pretty exciting to think that a decade in music has passed us already, dont you think? Well, in honor of this, I'd like to know who YOU think deserves a place on this list. What does your top 10 list look like? Who's on it, for what, and why? Let me know! I'll be posting my list in the new year once I've had some time to really think it over. I'll make one top ten list per category, but you can tell me about any one or more :) Waiting to hear from you!

Exam Dance Break Day 19

Hey Everyone!
And thats all folks! We've hit the last day of exams. After this, its over until midterms... so maybe about a month and a half haha. Enjoy it while you can! I cant believe its finally at an end. And in honor of that, I have the perfect song. I'm not even going to do a big piece on this because even though I finished a while ago, I plan to go out and CELEBRATE a little myself. So go out, have some fun and paint the town red (or purple for you fellow westerners out there) you deserve it! Exams are stressful, its necessary to unwind a bit before you go home and take it out on your family haha.

Exam Dance Break Day 18

Hey Everyone!
And the long trek continues... two days of exams left. So sad. I cant believe how late they go this year, its just nuts. Poor international students who get drafted on planes home for such a short period. Seems a shame. Anyways, nothing I can do to help sadly, except provide you with another distraction via music!

Today I'm going to give you Escape The Fate. Strange little band that I sometimes enjoy and sometimes completely resent. One one side, they make good music, especially for young guys, and they clearly know how to play with the best of them. On the other side, they are womanizers. I dont know these guys personally obviously, but I mean, all their videos really exploit women in many ways. All the girls are gorgeous rocker chick models with an inability to control their hormones. Its the way that women in the music scene were percieved back in the 80s, I just dont feel its appropriate for their young female fanbase. They should not be subjected to believing all rock girls are groupies. It comes down to these passe ideas still being an ever present part of their mainstream music. It should be about the music boys, not the women and the star treatment. Please do keep in mind that you are NOT Guns N Roses. Sorry!

But anyways, this song is called, Situations. Its a personal "guilty pleasure" which isn't really guilty, because I can openly admit it. Its a very basic song with simple construction and a few fancy flairs. However, it definitely remains a solid part of my party playlist so I figured it had a place here. Enjoy!

Exam Dance Break Day 17

Hey Everyone!
Wow, I can hardly believe there are still 2 days left of exams... you poor souls who are still writing (aka my roommate). Thats so brutal that they stretch this so far into the holidays. Not fair. I wonder... when will you all do your shopping? I could hardly get anything done with that looming pressure of unfinished exams.

Today I was baking cupcakes and dancing around my kitchen, as I like to do when I'm bored. Shuffle (once again, amazing Ipod feature 9/10 times... awkward 1/10 times :P) brought this song up and I had a lovely sing along session in the kitchen. With that in mind, I think its perfect for the exam dance break! So weldon, you giant concrete block you, its time to get up and dance. Ladies, this one is for you!

Exam Dance Break Day 16

Hey Everyone!
Oh my god... I can hardly believe it, but I AM DONE. Bye bye semester one, it was nice to know you! Hello break, I look forward to some R&R. And of course, lots of blogging because this has become a new form of entertainment/R&R for me :) I can hardly wait to sleep in, to do whatever I want, even to go to work and make some extra cash. Its going to be a good holiday break, I can feel it!
I digress, I am sorry for those of you still stuck in examination period. I'm sure my little rant of joy is very much not appreciated. I know when I was taking study breaks on Facebook and I saw the "I'm DONE!" statuses, I secretly wanted to punch them haha. So thats ok, if you secretly hate me right now (or even not so secretly) I understand completely. Exams bring out the worst in everyone. So to do my part to get you through this last stretch, I'm going to give you an awesome song to sing along to.
Today I thought I'd go with something you should all be completely familiar with. This right here, this is my karaoke jam. A few drinks, a microphone and a stage... watch me go! I just love it, its so much fun :) Its also a bar classic for those of you who frequent the local bar scene. You cant go a night in any bar without hearing this on the speakers. It turns the building into one giant singalong. Its pretty awesome. By now I'm sure you've guessed it... it's Dont Stop Believin' by Journey. Absolute classic, no one can deny that. So tune in, rock out and enjoy!

Green Day Prank Opening Act Prima Donna's Set

Hey Everyone!
I am off to my last exam in about an hour so I have to make this post very brief. However, with that being said, I am happy to announce my full, attentive return as of tomorrow! So for anyone who's been wondering what happened to the news stories I had up until a week and a half ago, don't you fret I'm going back to that format. Writing sadly had to take a backseat to the fun of University finals period. But now? Now I am back, full force so get ready for some better updates! In the mean time, I have  an entertaining little video for you. Found it on Green Day's website. Apparently the guys got bored backstage one night and decided to wreak havoc on the opening act's set. Its kind of funny, and clearly the band, Prima Donna, have a good sense of humor about it. I mean, you have to give them some credit. It CANNOT be easy to play while you have stunts like this going on all around you. So kudos boys, way to keep your wits about you and a smile on your faces. I guess you don't really mess with one of the biggest bands in the world when they take you on tour and give you a whole new audience, huh? Check out the video below, I highly recommend the area about 2:18... thats when the toilet paper comes out :P Enjoy!

Exam Dance Break Day 15

Hey Everyone!
Ok, I don't have as much time as I would like to post today. I have lots of news and stories backed up and I do honestly apologize for that but sadly, my priorities right now rest elsewhere. I have an exam left to write, I'm back at work picking up some extra shifts, and like many of you I am trying to get ready for the holidays. So much to do, so little time! I actually only have an hour to eat, shower and do whatever else before I get back to work. So here we go, super fast... a song to break the stress in your day and mine at the same time. How about a great pop-punk song called She's A Lady by Forever The Sickest Kids. One of the few songs by this group I really like. The song is about a boy in love with a girl who could really care less. Kind of sad but there's a sense of humor and almost slight revenge anthem to it that make the song good. Its a pretty solid song, and I hope you like it. Check it out!

The Runaways: Coming To A Theater Near You

Hey Everyone!
So I'm sure that by now most of you have heard about the new Runaways biopic thats been in the works. Well, trailers are starting to surface and I have to admit I'm mildly intrigued. I enjoy the Runaways, and I love Joan Jett so a biopic seems like it would be pretty stellar... the issue for me? The acting. The honest truth? I'm terrified of it haha.

Ever since I heard that Twilight Saga superstar, Kristen Stewart had been chosen to portray the female powerhouse, Joan Jett... I was a little distraught. I'm sorry, I'm probably going to kill a portion of my readership in saying this but honestly, I cannot stand Twilight. The books, the movies, and most of all the acting. It almost pains me to watch it unfold. Now, I AM willing to give her and costar Dakota Fanning (as Cherie Currie) a break here. Lets give them the benefit of the doubt. I mean, these women (Joan, Cherie, Lita, Jackie and Sandy) were crucial in bringing women into rock n roll. Part of a very important and influential movement that allowed women to make that transition into mainstream rock as real artists. Playing and writing their music, it wasn't something that had been done often before. These girls have a lot to live up to, a lot to represent. These roles wont be easy, thats for sure, so I'm willing to wait it out and see it for myself before I judge it too much.

What do you think about the Runaways story coming to theaters? Will you go see it? Why/why not? Share your thoughts!
In the mean time, heres the first trailer... see what you think!

Song of the Day: Cherry Bomb by The Runaways... classic. Look how young Joan is here, its crazy! To think she started here and worked her way over the next 30+ years to get where she is now... its unbelievable.

Exam Dance Break Day 14

Hey Everyone!
I know its only 1am... but I'm wide awake and I figured since I have work in the morning (yeah, I finish exams and go right  back to work, how lucky am I? haha) that I should do this now before I forget or lose my motivation. I came home today and I finally have music videos again, its a fantastic thing. Never realize how much you miss something until its gone, and thats totally the case with me and MuchLoud/PunchMuch. I used to watch MuchMusic but I find that their programming has overtaken the video aspect and I'm never home when they have a video flow going.

So I invest my time in rock/pop videos this way, but the current cable package I am sharing with my roommates does not enable me this privilege. As a result, its my own responsibility to keep up with music, which can be difficult when you're stuck with endless piles of academic research to do. However, I came across this song a while ago and was only reminded of it when I saw it on TV today. Of course, I have to post it now and share it with you. Its a song by the group 3Oh!3 called, Starstruck. It features the beautiful and talented miss Katy Perry.

I know, I know but she "sucks" right? Wrong. Now if you've ever actually SEEN (as in seen her perform IN PERSON) Katy play, you'd have to give her credit. She has a very unique vocal style and she sings her heart out. I could do without the cutesy girly girl thing she has going (which is NOT evident in this video thankfully) but she is a great singer and filled with talent. I took my younger sisters to see her over the summer... I expected to be bored and unimpressed, but it was totally the opposite. I was floored by her voice. As for 3oh!3, I have to be honest and say I've only heard a couple of their tracks. Great songs, super catchy and always get me dancing. I like their electro-pop style, they do a great job as two guys with the ability to make ridiculously catchy songs with clever lyrics. Anyways, here's the song. Warning, you will be stuck singing this for a while! But thats ok... after all, the point of the exam dance break is to sing and dance for a few minutes every day to relieve the serious stress of exams! So enjoy!

Exam Dance Break Day 13

Hey Everyone!
Man, I cant believe its almost two weeks into exams... thats nuts. I had a good break last night. Roommate's birthday so obviously I had to put the books down and join the festivities. We had a great night. Felt so good to unwind after a long week and a half of writing critical essays and learning about physics equations for hurricanes haha. Well deserved I think. Anyways, lets get on with the subject at hand here... exam dance break song of the day! Today I have a great track by one of my favorite bands, The Academy Is. Its called Neighbors and its off their 2007 release Santi. Its fun, poppy and upbeat. A party song, a little different from their usual material and it certainly manages to separate itself from the rest of his album. Here you go all you study bugs out there. Keep trucking, only a week of the insanity left! YOU CAN DO IT!

Hey Everyone!
Alright, well my essay is in and I'm finally feeling the welcome relief of Christmas break getting closer. YAYNESS... thats my all time favorite word by the way (even though it doesn't exist). Anyways, its my roommate's birthday and I'm getting ready to have some fun! That being said, I dont have much time to write, this will be a quick post. Today I'm going to cave in entirely and give you something pretty straight forward.

Today, we have a classic... Guns N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle". Now I dont feel that I really need to tell you much about this song, do I? Its amazing, its timeless, it makes a great ringtone, and it is essential to my party prep playlist. So check it out here and rock out!

Most Awkward Interviews Ever!

Hey Everyone!
Alright, so its essay crunch time now... due in t-12 hours... and I still have 2 pages to go. This right here, this is my procrastination! I know my family reads this, so I'm sorry to have to admit this to those who see me as a responsible student... but this is how its always been haha. This is how I get my 80s in University. I put it off until the last minute so that I force myself to come up with genius ideas and pull off a good mark. Now you know my shameful secret, and I apologize haha.

Anyways, my youtube browsing brought me back to some old favorites and I felt compelled to discuss them here... awkward interviews. Now, as someone who wants to be a music journalist, I have come to find these incidents quite funny and a little sad to watch, all at the same time. It almost pains me to see how some of these interviews go. Sometimes its a lack of research (or proper research), sometimes it crosses barriers and sometimes its just missing a great deal of personality on behalf of the interviewer.

First off the lack of research. When going to interview an artist, it is ESSENTIAL that you know what you're talking about. Otherwise, you just look silly and they may get annoyed. I'm not saying this out of experience, just out of being a witness to this. Watching interviews where the artist feels that you could care less... yeah, not going to help you out much. You often see them get frustrated and become more and more difficult to talk to.

Artists, like any other people, have comfort zones. Naturally, when you cross said comfort zone, nothing positive ensues. Things just get awkward fast. No one wants that. I hate watching interviews where the artist becomes an object, not a person. Its frustrating. Put yourself in their shoes... if you wouldn't answer the question, maybe they wont either and thats totally fair.

For an interviewer, personality is key. If the artist doesn't feel like they're getting anything from you, why should they be bothered to put on a show single handed? Its a lot of effort to perform and these people do it for a living. Having someone to share the job with probably makes it a lot easier so do your part and play it up!

This all spawned from a SINGLE disastrous interview that my friend Kelsey showed me a while ago. Ever since, I have not been able to look at interviews the same way... its just THAT bad. The interview, posted below, is with Max Bemis of Say Anything. He's their lead vocalist and a very interesting subject when approached right. This girl, this girl is terrible. You can just SEE the way max is wishing it would end. I particularly enjoy the lack of eye contact, the stupid questions and the way he just gives up completely early on in the interview. My favorite part is when she takes the stuffed unicorn out of his hands, as it seems to be his only source of amusement throughout the duration of her question/answer banter. If anything, this interview provides a lot of laughs, and a lesson on what NOT to do if you ever find yourself in her situation. Check it out, have yourself a chuckle!

Exam Dance Break Day 11

Hey Everyone!
So I meant to post this earlier, but its been a long day! Lets just say its rather late in the evening now, and I'm still sitting at the computer with a paper in front of me... seven pages in, three pages to go! I can feel the finish line approaching and I'm just about ready to leap those last few meters, hoping to land on my feet. This paper, its for my Culture of Celebrity class. The premise is to take a well known celebrity and analyze a wide variety of media created representations of this person. My selection? Fall Out Boy bassist, Pete Wentz. I know, I know, you're asking "Jess- why would you pick this guy out of every celebrity out there?" right? My explanation: I have to analyze every text available. Aka if I chose someone like Johnny Depp, I'd have to watch a couple hundred movies and television shows. Pete... a handful of music videos, a few CDs and some tabloids. Not too bad, nothing too intensive, gives me lots of time to do it well... in theory anyways haha. So as a result, I've been listening to a bunch of FOB music, trying to dissect it and talk about how it relates back the the media construction of Pete himself. Now, thanks to this, I WAS going to give you another FOB song even though I left you with one on Saturday... but I decided against this. Instead, I'm going to leave you with label mates, The Cab. I really enjoy this song, I can see it being great in clubs. Hope you like it, here you go! Enjoy!

Coheed Joke Circulates Internet

Hey Everyone!
So as I was browsing through some music news, I came across this and just HAD to share it with you. Apparently some people have made a joke song and claimed it is an official release off Coheed and Cambria's new album. The fun part? Its an acoustic parody of internet celebrity Tay Zonday's "Chocolate Rain". The track can be heard on the website here. What do you think? Real Coheed or just some people who are really good with computers and voice impressions? In all honesty, it does sound quite a bit like the upper range style of frontman, Claudio Sanchez. But for now, I'm going to go ahead and say this is just an internet prank... and a genius one at that.

Andrew McMahon: A Song For Katie

Hey Everyone!
I'm sure you're all getting a wee bit sick of my Jack's Mannequin blogs on her, but I cant help myself. I'm sorry, please forgive me. I just want to share this song with you... its incredible. Its called Katie, written about his sister Katie when he found out that she was a match for his stem cell donor. This is explained in his documentary Dear Jack and I swear, it about had me in tears. I wont bore you with this any longer, but below is the song (live performances only) and the lyrics. Let me know what you think! Personally, if I were Katie, I'd be floored and I think she was.

LYRICS:
Katie you're a brave girl, and I know its only just started.
I'm gonna be there at 6, with some flowers on sticks
That were clipped just to make the weak strong.
And Katie, its a strange world when girls can get so broken hearted
If it were me and the universe, I'd get the worst of this gone.

Katie, Katie I'm sorry that in your condition
The sunshine's been missing but Katie,
Don't believe that it isn't there.
Oh and Katie, Katie be happy
This world can be ugly, but isn't it beautiful?
We're not really here, and we're really not there
We're really not there.

Katie you're a brave girl and courage is something I'll need now.
'Cause its been a hell of a day I've spent fading away
We all fade sometimes, I believe
And Katie its a strange world as I watch the tables get turned around
And you've got the strength that I've lost in a thought that would carry me.

And Katie, Katie I'm sorry that in your condition
The sunshine's been missing but Katie,
Don't believe that it isn't there.
Oh and Katie, Katie be happy
This world can be ugly, but isn't it beautiful?
We're not really here, and i'm really not there

Whoa
Whoa

And it's not the end of the world,
It's not the end of the world,
It's not the end of the world,
'Cause the cops wouldn't break up this party.

And Katie, Katie I'm sorry that in your condition
The sunshine's been missing but Katie,
Don't believe that it isn't there.
Oh and Katie, Katie be happy
This world can be ugly, but isn't it beautiful?
We're not really here, and we're really not there.

Oh Katie, Katie I'm sorry that in my condition
Your sunshine's been missing but Katie,
Don't believe that it isn't there
Oh Katie, Katie be happy
This world can be ugly but isn't it beautiful?
We're not really here, and we're really not there
We're really not there,
We're really not there.

Katie, you're a brave girl,
And I know its only just started.

New From First To Last Track

Hey Everyone
When I was about 14, I adored this band. One of my favorites, and though their sound has certainly changed a lot, I still enjoy the music and appreciate what they've sacrificed for their careers. They've been through a couple member changes, being dropped by labels, and playing endless tours of the not so pleasant club circuits. This just goes to really show me that for these guys, its not all about the money. Its about passion... the writing and playing of music itself. So for that, kudos to these 4 young guys from Georgia. I know that every time I have seen them play, its been an experience itself. A few years back they played at this dingy little club downtown that I called home, The Embassy. That show is still easily one of the best memories I have of that building and those years.

Photos: Mine, The Embassy July 28/2007

This past week, they posted a new track to their Myspace page called "Going Lohan", which will be featured on their upcoming album Throne To The Wolves (March 2010). I think its very much the direction they were going with their last album, the self titled release of 2008. I also feel that Matt's vocals have dramatically improved since then. He faced a lot of criticism on their last album because people expected him to live up to former vocalist Sonny Moore. Personally, I dont think that was fair. The band has clearly tried to move on and reinvent themselves since Sonny's departure,  and it was a lot of struggle to even release that album. So I hope this does well for them. I'd love to see them back on the ball, on top of their game. These guys are all very talented, very ambitious, very driven musicians. They dont back down, they dont give up, they strive to pull through every time. And I cant help but respect that.

Here's the song. What do you think? Yay or Nay? Let me know!

Weezer Frontman Rivers Cuomo Released From Hospital!

Hey Everyone!
So it has finally been announced that Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has been released from the hospital following the frightening bus crash about a week ago. The singer and the bands manager were the only two injured when the bus hit a patch of ice and swerved off the road, landing in a muddy ditch just off the highway. Rivers stated that he didnt even feel himself leave the couch as he went airborn and likely hit the ceiling, this combined with the rough landing are believed to be the cause of his injuries. He suffered from three broken ribs, a punctured spleen and a punctured lung.

December 11th, he was officially discharged from a New York area hospital. Once he was able to walk without the aid of a cane and his blood tests were coming back with good news of recovery. Rivers opted to spend an extra night of rest in the hospital while awaiting the arrival of his bus. He is unable to fly right now due to the lung injury but the coach will hopefully SAFELY transport him back home to LA where he will continue to recover over the holidays.

So best of luck, safe trip, Rivers and stay strong! That road to recovery can be long and tedious but the fans are behind you 100%

Exam Dance Break Day 10

Hey everyone!
Wow, I feel absolutely FANTASTIC today. Wrote my physics exam this afternoon, quite sure I passed and I'm just thrilled to have it over and done with! Its like a weight has been lifted... the Christmas spirit is finally starting to set in. All I want to do now is light some candles (we don't have a fireplace), put on some old christmas flicks, and drink hot chocolate in the glow of the Christmas tree. Throw some egg nog into the mix and I think I have my perfect holiday celebration. Now if only I didnt have an essay looming over my head, and a bunch of unfinished christmas shopping to deal with... *sigh* it just never ends! But still, feeling pretty free now that the worst is out of the way!

So today for the exam dance break, for those of you still looking at a whole pile of finals to write... keep your chin up. Just think, soon enough you'll be home enjoying your holidays! It will all be worth the rest and relaxation you get, and its just around the corner. For today's song, I have Justice's D.A.N.C.E because thats pretty much what I want to do right now haha. Enjoy! PS. gotta love the video itself, pretty cool.

Hang in there guys, not far to go!

Green Day Rockband To Be Released In 2010!

Hey Everyone!
Quick study break for some very exciting news... what do you get when you take one of our generations best bands and combine it with one of the generation's most addicting video games? answer:  GREEN DAY ROCKBAND. My answer: what will soon be referred to by me as crack due to its highly addicting nature. Seriously, I'm going to have to cancel all outside social events for at least a day when this comes out so I can play every.single.song on every.single.instrument. I cant wait. No tracklist or release date yet. Check out the preliminary trailer here!

Exam Dance Break Day 9

Hey Everyone!
I'm crazy busy studying for my physics exam tomorrow... just cannot seem to focus at all! I've never really been a math/science person so this just is not my piece of cake. Western makes students take a class from each category, one of which happens to be math/science. Just my luck. Oh well, as long as I pass this exam tomorrow, I get the credit so I just have to force myself to pay attention and get it over with, right? Keep your fingers crossed for me! Anyways, moving along, I have another music video for all you study bugs out there. Today I have a Fall Out Boy song called Fame Infamy off their album Infinity On High. Sorry, for some reason it refuses to let me post the actual symbol, seems to think I'm trying to insert an html code. Computers are fun like that! Oh well. Its a great song, wicked beat that just makes you want to get up and dance the night away. Check it out and see what you think!

Keep at those books fellow exam takers, the vacation is almost here!

The two day festival, and opening night Hoodwinked are shaping up to be pretty sweet, a lot of diversity in the rock genre. Take a look below and see what you think. Maybe worth a trip down to New Jersey? So far, I think so. And if you happen to have an extra seat in your car, please... TAKE ME WITH YOU haha.

Song of the Day: Pool Party by The Aquabats... great summer/driving song. Which makes me think of festivals because that usually involves long drives, and long days of moshing in the summer heat. All you want to do after a long day of festival concert going is dive in a pool. So this song is pretty fitting on a number of levels I think. Enjoy!

Exam Dance Break Day 8

Hey Everyone!
So I'm writing to you this morning from the uncomfortable plastic furniture in Western's Taylor Library. Basically, I have a physics exam on sunday afternoon so I'm stuck here with a 2hr loan course text that I will have to keep taking out until they tell me to give it up. I've been here about 2hrs now... book is due back at 11:11 and I have about 2 pages of notes to show for it. I'm thinking this could be an absolute disaster... can anyone say all-nighter? ME! OH ME, I CAN!
*raises hand and waves it frantically in the air* See, this is what happens when I get up before the sun (7 is just not a nice hour of the day when you go to bed about 4 haha). Anyways, I'll give up the sarcastic and strange banter now and move on to something a little more typical, MUSIC! So in case any of you forgot, today is the day that Jack's Mannequin tickets go on sale for the 2/26/2010 Toronto date. I know I have my order in, and I really think you should too! In honor of my excitement, lets go with an old, relatable Something Corporate classic that is sure to have you laughing off old memories and belting it out in the library... stop by Taylor, we can make it a duet! So here we go... I Kissed A Drunk Girl by Something Corporate! ENJOY!

I do apologize for my caffeine high this morning... it was necessary to get me here in the first place haha
Back to the books! Best of luck everyone.

Road To Acceptance

Hey Everyone!
So in regards to that last post I made about the hate filled protest outside the All Time Low concert, I thought I'd post a song. Thats how I deal with emotion, I listen to music. And this song to me, is a perfect fit for the situation. Its an old Green Day song by the name of Road To Acceptance. Its off their 1991 album 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. I've always loved early Green Day material and this is no exception. Check out the song and lyrics below!

LYRICS

I always waste my time just wondering
What the next man thinks of me
I'll never do exactly what I want
And I'll sculpt my life for your acceptance

I always waste my time just wondering
What the next man thinks of me
I'll never do exactly what I want
And I'll sculpt my life for your acceptance

And I feel forgotten
Feel like rotting
(do you feel the same?)
(do you feel the same?)
Adolescence
Just can't make sense
(it's calling my name)
(it's calling my name)

I take a look around
And all the things I've found
I call it blind hatred
If you'd stop a while
And maybe if you'd smile
You would realize that
We're all the same

It's just like our brain
When it goes insane
We feel the same pain

All my life I've seemed to have this need
I think at times it even turns to greed
We all want to join some family
We'll even sacrifice a moral changing

And I feel forgotten
Feel like rotting
(do you feel the same?)
(do you feel the same?)
Adolescence
Just can't make sense
(it's calling my name)
(it's calling my name)

I take a look around
And all the things I've found
I call it blind hatred
If you'd stop a while
And maybe if you'd smile
You would realize that
We're all the same

It's just like our brain
When it goes insane
We feel the same pain

I take a look around
And all the things I've found
I call it blind hatred
If you'd stop a while
And maybe if you'd smile
You would realize that
We're all the same

It's just like our brain
When it goes insane
We feel the same pain

Its amazing how there is just a song for everything and every situation... I LOVE IT

All Time Low Protested By Baptist Group

Hey Everyone!
So speaking of ATL (as mentioned in my last post oddly enough), Alternative Press is reporting that the finale of their current tour was greeted by a large group of protesters. On December 6th, the buses rolled in to Philadelphia to be met by hateful messages and offensive puns. Apparently the group, Westboro Baptist Church, was protesting the  sexual ambiguity of the group. All Time Low, a band consisting of four guys in their early 20s, are often seen sporting v-neck t-shirts, tight jeans, and longer hair. The church group's website claims that they are a negative influence because they are "gender-confused, haphazard freakazoids". Signs were reported to hold messages like "All Time Perverts", "God Hates You", and "America Is Doomed".

This is perhaps one of the saddest displays I have seen/heard of in a while. I mean, come on, its almost 2010! Cant we just learn to get along, give peace a chance? I mean, this website is so offensive that I am actually going to refuse to link to it. I don't even recommend looking it up. Personally, I am a completely heterosexual female but seriously, I don't feel the need to protest other people's beliefs, rights and choices. I read up on this group, and I am left feeling upset, angry and shocked. Apparently they are well known for protesting almost every religion, race and lifestyle, going as far as to picket at funerals and the site of the 9-11 attacks. Thats just wrong on so many levels, not to mention incredibly hateful and disrespectful.

I have to give a lot of credit to the fans outside this show. According to some witnesses, the fans began to drown out the hate filled chants of the WBC with their own renditions of ATL songs as well as mottos like "Gay, Straight, Black, White, Same Battle, Same Fight". Frontman Alex Gaskarth took to his Twitter account as the riots raged by the bus, stating "I was just informed by picketers that I'm leading a generation of rebels to hell... no ma'am. I'm leading a generation of rebellion against the Empire!" and "If embracing all lifestyles will lead me to hell, then I'll see you all there. It's going to be one incredibly tolerant and happy inferno". Again? WELL PLAYED, ALEX! I could not have said it better myself!

The band is apparently still confused as to why they were chosen as a target, and I have to agree. I mean, they arent all that "frightening" compared to some bands out there. Marilyn Manson, that makes sense. ATL? Not so much. Why not picket your local high school, its about the same demographic as that show. In the end, the protesters were outnumbered by other groups, so they packed up and left. Not before filming this quick video.

What do you think of this story? Personally, I still cant believe all this hatred exists. Its sad, really.

More coverage:

Way to handle a difficult situation, All Time Low! Whole new level of respect for these guys!

Exam Dance Break Day 7

Hey Everyone!
So its a week into study period pretty much. So far so good, I'm holding out and I hope you all are too. Tomorrow kick starts my days at the library... I get to cram for a physics final... oh the joys of a university that demands diversity in class choices ahaha. Anyways, today I think I'm gonna go with a little All Time Low. This is a song called Weightless that I absolutely love. Its super catchy, chill and the video is pretty funny. A good combination. I saw them play this live back in May when they toured with Cobra Starship, Hey Monday and Fall Out Boy on the Believers Never Die Tour. Having never seen them play before, this is the song I walked away singing. They may be young and poppy, but they know how the business works and they know their way around a stage, instruments included. They are great at getting the crowd pumped up, so I have to give them credit. There's nothing particularly striking about the music itself... its fairly generic pop punk with a few well spoken lines and memorable riffs, but its nothing you haven't heard before for the genre. The real difference with these guys is the live performance. Its definitely something you'll be able to recall because they make you feel like you are as much a part of the performance as they are. So here we go, All Time Low's Weightless. Wicked song, some pretty sick cameos and something to hum along to in the library for the next few hours!

Changes To Come!

Hey Everyone!
So first of all, I'd like to say thanks for everyone who has stuck with me throughout the first stages of my blogging journey. All your page views, all your comments, they mean the world to me so from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU. Last night was the last class of term, meaning that my class required blogging has now come to an end. But honestly, I have to say I have grown to love writing for you. Its something I look forward to... every time I read exciting music news, all I can think about is sharing it here. So, I want to say now that I definitely intend to continue writing. Every day, maybe more than once. And I hope that you will all stick with me as I undergo a few changes! Now that its no longer being graded, I feel I can take a few more liberties and I plan to do so. The blog will likely be changing format... may try my hand at some HTML codes and see what templates catch my eye. I also hope to have a couple friends help me write and post here so that I can get some more diverse genres for you. Other than that, things will likely stay the same. Nothing too drastic, but just so you're aware! Thats about it for now. Thanks again and check back soon!

New The Used Music Video

Hey Everyone!
Today, I have a video from an old favorite of mine, The Used. I used to love these guys when I was about 14/15. Cant say their newer music has been a big hit with me, but I don't hate this track. Not bad, kind of catchy. Its weird hearing Bert sing without that signature growl underlying the chorus but he does have a good voice none the less. So here it is, Empty With You by The Used off their latest album Artwork. If you like The Used, they are playing at the John Labatt Centre as an opening act for Three Days Grace on December 15th. Enjoy!

Vans Warped Tour Announcement!

Hey Everyone!
So the Vans Warped Tour made an announcement today via their awesome pit reporter, Tiff. Not only are the tour dates posted here but the BANDS are going to be announced on DECEMBER 18th! Thats not far from now, only a couple weeks. I'm really excited to see who's on the list this year. Lately it hasn't been as welcoming to older bands (they usually play the last sets of the day when half the crowd goes home) but they're still kicking and I'm hoping to see a come back. Who are you hoping to see? Tell Me, I'd love to know!

July 9, 2010 in Toronto Anyone??? See you there!

Song of the Day: The Festival Song by Good Charlotte... The first year I went to Warped Tour was 2004. Good Charlotte headlined and I remember being very excited for it. They were one of my favorite bands when I was in high school. They were my gateway band for lack of better words... I found a lot of old 80s punk through the 6 degrees of links they provided me with. It opened a whole new world for me, and I still experience a great deal of nostalgia when I hear it now. Even just bringing up this song... definitely takes me back!

Burning Empires Take Over Myspace Airwaves

Hey Everyone!
So last I mentioned, some of the members of Fall Out Boy are taking the band's hiatus as a chance to diversify and try new things. Andy Hurley, drummer, being one of them. He and some friends from Misery Signals are working on a side project called Burning Empires... and they are on fire! They have already posted a few songs to their myspace and Spin, and twitter is in an uproar. Apparently no one thought the soft spoken, easy going drummer had it in him. The hard, fast, political tunes seem to be a hit so far. A long way from the poppy emo lyric tunes he produced with FOB. He is also working on a 2nd project with members of Anthrax and Every Time I Die called, The Damned Things. I personally like it, what do you think?

Green Day Record Hit Single "21 Guns" With Musical Cast

Hey Everyone!
So Green Day announced late last month that they would be recording their single 21 Guns with the cast of the successful American Idiot Musical. A lot of people are criticizing the band, saying its far from punk rock roots... but is that true? I mean, sure. Its not exactly underground, rugged and raw the way punk once was. But at the same time, its back to Kurt Cobain's definition... "Punk is musical freedom. Its saying, doing and playing what you want". They don't care that critics and fans alike are going to point fingers and say "you're not punk", they're still doing it. And you know what? The results are pretty interesting. Plus, if you've already gone the route of making your album into a musical, why not try something like this? Take a listen here, what do you think?

Coldplay Discuss Sound For New Album

Hey Everyone!
Coldplay has come forward to discuss the kind of sound they would like to experiment with on their upcoming release. Anyone who knows Coldplay is familiar with their diverse arena rock songs that hold s certain sense of unity, urgency and passion. But the band has decided to shy away from the epic ballads on their next release, choosing instead something a little more soft spoken and stripped down. They are claiming that you will likely find a lot of basic, acoustic music instead of the Viva La Vida anthem style.

Why mess with a good thing? The band has received ample praise over the last few years of their career. Songs like Yellow, The Scientist, Fix You and their more recent Viva La Vida are stadium anthems of a different kind with their generally softer appeal, but they all hold that key recipe for success. I was never much a Coldplay fan until last year when I just decided to really listen to a whole album and came to realize, it was brilliant in its own way. There's a certain feeling that takes over as you hear a beautiful ballad like Fix You on the airwaves. Its soft and to put it simply- pretty, but so so so sad. It just takes over somewhere inside you, you can feel the raw emotion through the speaker. A far cry from my cd shelves of Bad Religion and Black Flag, it was something a little more inspired for lack of better words.

I dont mean to say that Punk wasn't/isn't inspired. Just that this band is a little more poetic than blunt in their messages. Its clear but ambiguous at the same time. Again, its just interesting and I'm interested to see what they come up with this time. Maybe something a little more reminiscent of their early work? Maybe something entirely new? Who knows! Guess we'll have to wait and see what comes up in the new year!

What do you think of Coldplay? Yay or Nay? Are you interested to hear this stripped down sound? Let me know!

Exam Dance Break Day 6

Hey Everyone!
So its day 6 of my version of the USC exam jam... the last day of class, how stoked are you?! I know I'm thrilled! I have one class (which I am currently sitting in) and one presentation to do (7pm tonight) and then... FREEDOM! Sort of... I have some other stuff to do but you know, this is the big chunk. I know some of you are also done as of tonight... lucky you! Have a celebratory drink for me, alright? Anyways, in honor of the last day of term I'm going to post TWO music videos. Thats right... TWO MUSIC VIDEOS for you to rock out to!

The first one? We Are The Champions by Queen because we have conquered yet another semester and are that much closer to graduation! YAY... I think. I have to admit I'm getting used to this lifestyle and come May, it will be hard to say goodbye to. But in the mean time, here we go... the legend, the icon... QUEEN!

The second video? Fight For Your Right To Party by The Beastie Boys because we all deserve that right after working hard for a term. All those papers, all those exams, all those hours of mind numbing lectures... its more or less over for a month so go out and fight for YOUR right to party! Plus, I have always had a little soft spot for these guys. They're quirky, they're crazy and their music is fun. So here you go, enjoy!

Thats all for now, I have a couple music news blogs in the works so stay tuned for more!
