Green Day Cover Rolling Stones On Jimmy Fallon

In case you missed it, Green Day did a pretty sweet cover of The Rolling Stones Classic "Rip This Joint". The performance was part of a week long celebration of the Rolling Stones album Exile On Main Street. The cover is really upbeat, and even if it is a cover, it sounds a lot like classic Green Day meets Foxboro Hot Tubs. The celebration of the band's 10th studio album is the result of its re-release. Jesse Labelle Steals The Show

Hey Everyone!

So last night, I had the opportunity to go check out Faber Drive's tour in support of their new album "Cant Keep A Secret". Along with them for this leg of the tour, they brought fellow Canadian artists Jesse Labelle and The New Cities. Here's a rundown of the show for those of you who are curious or about to check the tour out in your home town!

Honestly, I say this without bias and without a fan girl bone in my body... Jesse Labelle absolutely STOLE THE SHOW. Its a shame that he is the opener on this tour, but it makes sense as he just released his first full length album on Wax records in April of this year. He's been called the next John Mayer, and after last night, I can see why this young Toronto native is getting such high praise. Jesse's set was filled with perfect pitch, soft melodies, incredible guitar solos and lyrics that made every girl in the building swoon. The small, confident smiles he flashed were always followed by bursts of cheers and screams. But his talent goes far beyond those boy band good looks. Behind all that, there is a singer and songwriter with the ability to write beautiful ballads about life and love. Trust me, this boy has only just begun his career... forget those short lived, 90s boy band escapades of his- he's clearly grown up since then.

Jesse is a true, raw talent. It was great to see a young man take the stage with such ease and confidence in his music. The set was nice and simple... no extravagant stage theatrics, just some guys in jeans jamming out on their instruments. So refreshing to see a band who let the music speak for itself. Particularly stunning was the solo acoustic rendition he performed of his song "Lost". Throughout his set, I had to remind myself that I was in fact NOT watching a young Butch Walker. So if you're into gorgeous indie love songs, definitely check this guy out! You wont regret it.

Sadly for me, that's where the talent on this tour kind of started to die. Next up to play was The New Cities. I had seen these guys play back in the summer when I took my two younger sisters to see Katy Perry as a way to spend some time with them. I didn't think much of their set, but it was alright. Nothing entirely too memorable but they served their purpose and played well. Last night, I'm not sure I can be as nice. Something was really off, and as far as I could tell, it was the vocals. Following Jesse's near flawless vocal style must have been difficult to follow, but I mean, the key of each song ran noticeably flat. Also, after the first few tracks, I began to have difficulty telling the start of one from the next. It was pretty much 40mins of solid techno-pop-punk. A couple songs stood on their own two feet and proved a nice break, but by the end of it, I wasn't sure if they had played 5 songs or 15. There is potential, that's for sure. Maybe last night was just an off night for the Quebec boys. I reserve total judgement of this band until I see them one more time... third time is a charm, right? Not sure if that logic applies to music and artists or not but I'll choose to be hopelessly optimistic for once in my life haha.

Finally, headliners Faber Drive took the stage. Now, I have to say I actually used to like this band. I mean, I didn't run out to the local store to pick up their CD or anything, but I could sing along when tracks made appearances on radio and television stations. I liked the somewhat generic love songs, they were well played and well produced so I had very few complaints... and then came their latest album Cant Keep A Secret... yeah. I don't even know what to say anymore because I'm pretty sure aliens abducted the original band and are now inhabiting clone bodies or something because they pulled a COMPLETE 180 and jumped on board this techno-pop-punk bandwagon which is still moving records at a fast pace. To say the release of "G-G-Get Up And Dance" caught me off guard is an understatement. You get the point, enough of my rant, lets get back to the show!

Now, I didn't stay for their entire set... in fact, I think I left after about 5 songs. However, it wasn't bad. They played a good mix of newer and older tracks to kick off their set which I enjoyed. The performance was definitely high energy as the band members bounced around the stage. It is great to see people having fun on stage without overdoing it. Faber and Labelle were both on par with that idea. All in all, I definitely prefer their earlier material. Songs like "When I'm With You" and "Second Chance" instantly find their way into your Itunes play list with their catchy, heart felt lyrics and alternative rock finesse. I'm interested to see what the B.C. boys do next... will they stick to the trend or venture back to the alt rock their fans love? Only time will tell. However, if you're looking for a fun night out with some good music and lots of energy, check these guys out. You'll have a good time, and that's what concerts are all about!

Overall, this tour is fairly generic. A few upbeat pop-punk bands with synths and auto tune used as an instrument. Throw in a young Canadian songwriting heart throb who plays the guitar with the precision of a seasoned pro, and well, its worth the money spent. If you're looking for a fun night out, you may wanna see if this tour is rolling through a town near you!

Video: All Time Low Play "Weightless" Acoustic

Hey Everyone!

Today I just want to share a video with you. I came across this while link clicking on Youtube and its really well done. You know how some people sound great on an album mix, and maybe not quite so great when they play live and particularly acoustic? Yeah... you know what I mean. Sadly, for some people, acoustic sets can be dangerous because the soft guitar does very little to hide flaws. In fact, it pretty much serves to emphasize your voice! Thats why I was impressed with this acoustic performance by Alex and Zach of All Time Low. They play the hit single "Weightless" and in all honesty, it shows that Alex's voice is better than I ever gave him credit for. He clearly knows how to sing. His pitch and tone are both on par... its nice to see that the band has underlying talent outside catchy songs and the label desired look. Check out the video below, and prepare to be pleasantly surprised by what you hear!

Disclaimer: I actually LIKE All Time Low. I'm not trying to say that they are only in it because they are the kind of band that sells albums right now, its almost the opposite. I'm complimenting them on their ability to play very well in an acoustic set because it tends to be difficult for even the best bands these days. Just wanted to clear that up because I know it sounds like I'm being a little critical of them haha.

Patrick Stump Performs Solo Act For First Time Live At SXSW

Hey Everyone!

As I mentioned a while back, after FOB went on Hiatus, lead vocalist Patrick Stump decided to give a solo project a try. The talented, young multi-instrumentalist took to the stage for the first time at Austin's annual SXSW music festival in a small capacity club of 21+ fans. Still clearly getting used to the idea of solo performance, I have to say I think he did a good job.

The rough tracks sound pretty catchy, definitely a lot of potential there. A few fans noted the fact that he's starting to prove he can write lyrics ... maybe he doesn't need Wentz after all? Personally, I have always admired his musicianship. From his production/studio work to his vocals and guitar style on FOB albums past and present, he has proven himself as a very well musically educated young man... keep in mind, he's still only in his 20s and already quite accomplished in the pop-punk world.

American Idol Contestant Fails To Impress Judge With Acoustic Fall Out Boy Cover

Hey Everyone!

What a shocker, eh? Who would have guessed that participants on American Idol are frequently criticized by the judges? What a cruel world we live in haha.

Twenty three year old Andrew Garcia, a finalist in the top 24 of the popular reality series took to the stage this week with an acoustic rendition of a Fall Out Boy favorite, "Sugar We're Going Down". Simon Cowell, as usual, had some less than impressed words for the performance, but fans are supporting his choice. Was it a critique just for the sake of upholding the image? Or a valid comment? Who knows.

Andrew auditioned in LA and has done well in the competition so far. He hails from Moreno Valley, where he plays with his band The Adrian William Project.

Alexisonfire Shut Down Vancouver Olympic Venue

Hey Everyone!

So in wake of Canada hosting this year's winter Olympics, Vancouver has been playing host to a slew of Canadian musicians. Pride has hit the city with a tremendous force and its all been fun at the games until now, when St.Catherine natives and Canadian favorites- Alexisonfire, took the stage.

News reports are flying across the web stating that within seconds of the first track, police were forced to intervene and shut down the concert. Apparently, as soon as the band took the stage, the fans got rowdy and surged forward, breaking the fence and eliminating the space between the stage and the crowd. Eye witness reports are claiming that there was no direct violence apparent in the crowd, no fighting or acts of aggression, but at least 20 people were injured as a result of the pushing.

Alexisonfire apologized to the crowd, having to cancel their performance to prevent any further damage or injury. The boys said there was no way possible to play with the situation- no barrier, injured people and sharp objects on the ground. sadly, some of the audience members did not take it too well and began chanting back in anger... come on guys, you broke the safety barricade, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? Cobra Starship Performs At The People's Choice Awards

Hey Everyone!

Check out Cobra Starship's performance at the 2010 People's Choice Awards here. They performed Hot Mess and of course the smash hit, Good Girls Go Bad. Missing from the performance was Leighton Meester. Instead, the band had Nicole S. of Pussycat Doll fame fill in the female vocals. She wasnt awful, but I think I would have just preferred to see Vicky T take over as they do on tour. She's pretty good, if you cant have Leighton, she's the next best thing. Nicole just sounds like she's forcing it, screaming into the mic almost... its not natural and soft the way Leighton sings it. Her voice, I find, also does not blend with Gabe's very well. Its not the same harmony dynamics that the recording carries. I dont know... thats how I feel haha.

Green Day Prank Opening Act Prima Donna's Set

Hey Everyone!

I am off to my last exam in about an hour so I have to make this post very brief. However, with that being said, I am happy to announce my full, attentive return as of tomorrow! So for anyone who's been wondering what happened to the news stories I had up until a week and a half ago, don't you fret I'm going back to that format. Writing sadly had to take a backseat to the fun of University finals period. But now? Now I am back, full force so get ready for some better updates! In the mean time, I have  an entertaining little video for you. Found it on Green Day's website. Apparently the guys got bored backstage one night and decided to wreak havoc on the opening act's set. Its kind of funny, and clearly the band, Prima Donna, have a good sense of humor about it. I mean, you have to give them some credit. It CANNOT be easy to play while you have stunts like this going on all around you. So kudos boys, way to keep your wits about you and a smile on your faces. I guess you don't really mess with one of the biggest bands in the world when they take you on tour and give you a whole new audience, huh? Check out the video below, I highly recommend the area about 2:18... thats when the toilet paper comes out :P Enjoy!

American Music Awards Pt.2

Hey Everyone!

Ok so welcome to part two of my AMA review. This time, I'm going to focus on the performances of the night. From Janet Jackson to Adam Lambert's "grand finale", the night was interesting to say the least. Some performances were much better and much more theatrical than others, some were simple and clean while some were tacky and over the top. It almost felt like watching a variety night. Anyways, on to my thoughts!

Janet Jackson: The girl still has some moves left in her, thats for sure. The dance routines, though awkward, demonstrate that Janet still has some of that star quality left in her... but I dont know how much longer that will last. I think she's seem her prime and it has long past. But the performance was not as terrible as it could have been. A few shaky notes and a little reminiscent of her late brother, she still gave it a decent shot.

Daughtry: Can I just say, I've personally had enough? He does have a great voice, that I cant deny. But I just cant get into the music... I dont feel his passion. I dont know why, I just dont believe him if that makes sense?

Shakira: I had to think for a few moments when she came out because honestly, we were all sitting around going "What? Sharkira? THAT? No, No way... Really?". She has come a long way from her Whenever, Wherever roots of mainstream popularity. She looked great, the performance was orchestrated in a way that was not too flashy or overdone and she sounded alright. Nothing fantastic but it was well done. Nothing memorable about the song itself.

Keith Urban: unable to find a link for this one. Now, I'm not big on country but the guy can definitely sing so I give credit where its due. Good performance, good sound, all around not bad. I'd make more commentary but I'm only able to work off what I can remember and apparently, from his performance, its not much. Sorry K.U fans!

Kelly Clarkson: We already know this girl can sing. Like it or not, her performance was simple, classic and moving. This is why Kelly has maintained stardom after winning American Idol. Its also probably one of the only thing AI has to really show for their many seasons of contest winners... Anyone heard from Ruben Studdard lately? Anyways, she looked great (LIKE A REAL WOMAN NOT A STICK, KUDOS!), she sounded great and her performance was lovely.

Jay-Z/Alicia Keys: I liked it... so sue me! Alicia is incredibly talented both as a singer and instrumentalist. Combine her jazzy R&B vocals with Jay-z's melodic flow and you cant help but have a winning combination. Empire State Of Mind was a great performance choice. Well done.

Black Eyed Peas: Or as I like to call them... Fergie, Will I Am and those other guys. Though I have to say, I'm glad they had a bit bigger of a part in this performance. Anyways, theres no question as to why they do so well on the charts. The music is well produced and creative, the band performs well together as a group and they really understand the music process. The performance was big and intricate, but definitely something to talk about.

Rihanna: Again, I was asking "who is this" for the first minute or so of the performance. The intro to her performance is nearly a minute long video of some kind of sci-fi robot surgery. All in all, I thought she actually looked and sounded pretty good. The outfit, lasers and all, was pretty cool I thought. In fact, my roommate asked if it was bad that she would wear that in public. For all the bad reviews she got for this album, I dont know, because the live performance was pretty decent!

Carrie Underwood: I had to laugh... as soon as she came out on the stage my roommate's first reaction was something along the lines of "whoa, when did Carrie Underwood go all Britney Spears?" And although I have to agree, I do feel like a lot of it had to do with the song itself. It is a little more out there than some of her other songs. I like it though. She has the voice and she's gorgeous. The song and routine were done well enough, I have no complaints but I have no real praise either. It was just... good. Nothing phenomenal, nothing terrible... just plain old good.

Lady Gaga: Honestly, probably one of the better performances of the night. It had it all, theatrics, talent, and intrigue. I'm not going to go into major detail here because the performance speaks for itself... but was anyone else reminded of the movie Alien when they saw her outfit? Because I did!

Mary J Blige: Is she really still singing? I do like her voice but I just feel like she's kind of yesterday's news by this point. Could not find her performance online either. Sorry, youtube takes everything down!

J.LO: Again, this chick is still performing? Didn't she just have a kid? I don't know, I was not very excited about this and it actually took me quite some time to figure out who was even on the stage. Apparently this was supposed to be a comeback deal for her but I just dont see it taking off. No one cares anymore...

Whitney Houston: An incredible voice that's for sure. She's still got it and she proved that the other night. Her performance was not exactly her best, but it was spot on vocally and she looked fantastic.

Alicia Keys: Ok so I personally was a bigger fan of her performance with Jay-Z. The piano and vocals were way more stand out than this one. What was with that outfit, arent the 80s over? The weird superhero intro was also slightly tacky. Dance routines were decent and while her voice was great as always, I found it was lost in the communication due to the bigger stage theatrics.

Eminem/50 Cent: Now I will openly admit, I like Eminem. I think he's a talented artist who has worked hard over the years to get where he is. However, I am not a 50 cent fan and I think that may be half the problem I had with this one. And "Crack A Bottle"... really? Why not something more fun like We Made You or something more serious like Beautiful... something that represents a greater percentage of your work, not the one of maybe five songs you have that belong in a dance club.

Timbaland/Nelly Furtado/So Shy: Kind of enjoyed the zombie/night of the living dead theme of this performance. The vocals were good, and the dancers were entertaining. Nelly and Soshy looked great. I have to admit, never heard of Soshy before but she has a pretty nice voice. I think we've all come to expect good work from Timbaland and he didnt disappoint in my opinion.

Green Day: A very simple take for these guys. After the more energized performances of Know Your Enemy and East Jesus Nowhere that they have been playing at awards shows, I was surprised to see them take it down with a lovely live version of 21 Guns. From start to finish, it was three minutes of soft rock with Billie Joe crooning along. Not their best work for sure, but simple and classic... no big theatrics, its all about the voice.

Adam Lambert: Ok... this is something he NEVER could have gotten away with on American Idol, thats for sure. Here's my issue... I get that he's gay and proud, I do. Congrats bud, but is it absolutely necessary to try and use that as shock value and shove our faces in it? I mean, simulating sex on stage is probably not that acceptable for anyone but Madonna and even she, a heterosexual white female, gets in trouble for it. Be gay, be proud, I support you 100% but please refrain from theatrics like this. It did NOTHING for your voice which was supposed to be the whole point of a live performance.

So that about sums up my views of the night's performances. I know some of them are short and not into details, but thats probably because I didnt get to really watch it... my roommate was having a party so there were other things going on in the room that distracted from the tv and it was frequently muted by people trying to put on some music... I'm sorry, I fought for the awards show to do this post, I really did. But I didnt always succeed in my battles haha. Anyways, what did you think of the performances? Favorites? Jack's Mannequin on The Daily Show

So this blog is gonna be really short, but I wanted to share this with you. Last week, Andrew McMahon of Jack's Mannequin performed on The Daily Show. I cant find an embedding enabled version of this video anywhere due to the fact that I am Canadian and "this video cannot be displayed in your region" messages are all that I can find. Piano Rock

 Hello!

When you think of rock music, what instruments come to mind? Electric guitar, bass, drums... and keys? Or is that just my personal list? I fully support the adoption of pianos in rock. Though keyboards have been incorporated in the past with bands like Meatloaf, Fleetwood Mac and Queen, I have to say I'm a big fan of the recent resurgence. There's just something about the way keys fit into rock music... it makes it epic! It can also lend a soft side to a traditionally heavy genre. 

I find that there's a certain emotionality attached to pianos. Be it an electric keyboard with a flashy player, or the traditional full set up with a bench, it just comes with a level of soul. If you don't know what I'm talking about, watch someone play in a live setting and you'll soon see for yourselves. 

I'll never forget seeing one of my favourite piano based rock groups, Something Corporate, play when I was about 15. Watching Andrew McMahon control that stage... jumping on his own personally painted stand up piano... it was pure, raw passion. When I had the opportunity to watch his new band, Jack's Mannequin, play from side stage at the Vans Warped Tour a couple years ago, it was the same awe inspiring feeling as the first time. Trust me, its difficult to compare their level of emotion and musicality to that of any other performer. 

So if you're into piano/keyboard rock, here are a few bands you should check out!

Its just the kind of instrument you cant play without some level of passion. Its always moving, and always beautiful. Enjoy!

Song of the Day: Saviour by Rise Against

One of my favourite bands, guaranteed to come up a few times in posts haha. I woke up to this song on my radio this morning, not a bad way to kick start homecoming if you ask me!

Wiki's Rock N Roll Handbook

Good Morning!

            So I was browsing the internet looking for some upcoming local shows and CD releases to write about today. Instead I came across this fascinating little page on Wiki's "How To" site and I was inspired. Rock concerts are an interesting experience. For those of you who have never been, my words could do little to explain the vibrant world of live performance. Lets just say you have to be there to understand it. Surrounded by a sea of people, all screaming and chanting... it can certainly be intimidating for a newcomer to the genre. Maybe this article is helpful in that sense? To eliminate fear and worry to those who have never entered this world? But can I just ask the simple question here... since when does rock n roll have rules and guidelines to adhere by? Isn’t that the whole point of rock? To rebel against conformity, to be free to express yourself without fear of judgement? So therefore, a newcomer to the rock concert should be at ease no matter what. A rock legend, and personal 'icon' of mine, Kurt Cobain once said, 

"Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing and playing what you want." 

            I've always kept this quote in mind. I think it perfectly describes the true spirit of punk and rock as genres. I've always loved the feeling of unity I get at shows. How everyone is a perfect fit. No one cares about gender, fashion, background, religion, none of it matters. I've met some of the most interesting people at concerts because its a place where (I feel at least) people shouldn't be ashamed to be completely themselves.

            So back to the article. What has this rant got to do with anything, you ask? Here is my point. There are no guidelines to a concert. In fact, this whole thing made me laugh. "Act the part," it says, "Sing. Shout. Dance. Get involved! Don't stand there like a bump on a log! Sing the lyrics. If you don't know them all, no sweat, print the lyrics off and read them on the way to the concert. Sing the parts you know often." Just the first word... "act". Allow me to share some of my wisdom having been to more than enough of these things in my 20 years of life... don't act! BE YOURSELF. I know its cheesy and cliche, but trust me it works. You don't have to play the part... you don't have to dress a certain way or act like Sid Vicious to be a part of the environment. No, if you want to sing and dance, then do it. If you'd rather grab a chair and just watch, then go right ahead! If skinny jeans and band tees aren't your cup of tea, then wear whatever makes you happy (though I agree with the note about comfy shoes and clothing because its key to a good time). Oh, and please, PLEASE do not print off the lyrics and bring them with you. I know I said its all judgement free, but that's just asking for it. If you don't know the words, SO WHAT?! Forget about it, don't worry, and just enjoy yourself. Who knows, maybe you'll hear a song that really sticks with you long after the house lights come on. 

            This also kind of applies to any live music event of any genre. Don't feel compelled to become part of the crowd, individuality is much more interesting. So if you are someone who has just developed an interest in the rock n roll universe, then I extend to you a warm welcome. Just remember: there are no rules, make your own. Test the waters a couple times and decide how you want to act, dress, and generally go about attending live shows! Take these rules and throw them out the window, I know I plan to.
