Ruby SoHo Gets A Makeover From Vampire Weekend

Hey Everyone!

So unless you've been living in a cave somewhere, you've heard of up and coming indie kings, Vampire Weekend. Their recent album Contra is selling in great numbers, and is the subject of a lot of critical praise. If you havent heard it, go check it out! Anyways, in another wicked career move, the boys have released a cover of Rancid's 1995 hit "Ruby Soho"... and its BRILLIANT!

The song (which can be heard HERE) is a whole new take on the classic punk tune, but its makeover is anything but disappointing. Fans of both bands can appreciate the way these guys reconstructed it to make it their own. The cover is also available for download, in case you happen to really love it like I do haha.

Here's the original for those of you who havent heard it, its probably familiar regardless!

Top Ten Tunes For Your Super Bowl Party

Hey Everyone!

Hard to believe its already that time of the year again... time for Football's ultimate game, SUPER BOWL XLIV. Yes folks, in case you have been living under a rock, you are well aware that kick off is this evening. Even I know about it, and I havent got the slightest clue about the game. I only vaguely understand how the rules work, but Super Bowl parties are still a good time for all. Pick a team, root for your colors and make up some rules for a drinking game (they dont even have to be coherent, thats half the fun!)

 

So to accompany your football party, why not have some music? Maybe you've got some people who are just not that into the game hanging out looking for a good time. Maybe you've got a pre-game party going as I write this, or maybe you wanna have an all out bash and just throw on the captions so you can say you saw that play when you go to class tomorrow. In any case, this music is sure to fire you up and get you pumped for a great game!

10. TNT by ACDC- Its just fun, and who doesnt wanna listen to some ACDC?!

9. Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited - You ALL know this classic sports anthem... the question is, are you ready for this?

8. Dont Stop Believin' by Journey- Because really, when does this song ever NOT belong on a playlist? Not to mention, its the perfect musical interlude when your team is down a few points and you need to seek out new motivation!

7. Livin On A Prayer by Bon Jovi- "We've gotta hold on, Ready or not, We live for the fight when its all that you've got... Oh, we're halfway there, Oh livin on a prayer!" Give this a go at halftime if your team is down, it should restore some hope haha

6. Know Your Enemy by Green Day- As much as I cant say I'm a massive fan of this Green Day track, its a total sports anthem (even though thats unintentional!) I mean, you gotta know your enemy when the Super Bowl comes around right?

5. We Will Rock You by Queen- "We will, we will ROCK YOU!" what better way to edge someone on over that bet you have running for the winner? Sing it when you get a touch down, it will really pump you up!

4. Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor- "Its the eye of the tiger its the thrill of the fight, Rising up to the challenge of our rivals"... enough said I think? haha

3. Song 2 by Blur- Just a fun song with a lot of energy!

2. Rock N Toll Part 2 by Gary Glitter- Yet another classic sports anthem... have this play whenever you want in the background, particularly during the intense moments of the game. So fitting.

1. We Are The Champions by Queen- To wrap up the game of course... always an epic cheer! (assuming your team wins anyways haha) Nothing rubs in a victory better than this classic anthem!

So enjoy your super bowl parties, live it up, have some fun and cheer them on!

Who are you rooting for? My roommate tells me that I'm rooting for the Saints haha

Once Again, My Apologies!

Hey Everyone!

I come to you today from the confines of my study prison- the university community centre. Food, tables, quiet conversation and the ability to answer my phone make this place far more ideal than the library. I dont know about you, but being in a little cubby where you can hear a pin drop makes me feel very trapped... not helpful when studying. I have a midterm on monday afternoon... there are 141 pages of reading for  the course thus far in ONE book, and 4 chapters in a second. For those 141 pages, there are 2 pages on each (its a photocopied book with 2 pages copied on each 8.5x11) so I technically have TWICE the amount of reading to do. I'm on what claims to be page 34, but in all reality, is in fact page 68 which makes me feel a little better about the way I spent the last 4hours and some odd minutes of my life.

Following this reading, I have an essay due on tuesday, a writing assignment due for thursday's workshop, and a major project in my Serial Killers class due the day back from reading week. All I can say is that this week is pretty much going to have me running around like a chicken with my head cut off... but at the same time, I'll be just that much happier to be on break! 

This all being said, thats why my posts have been (and sadly will continue to be) somewhat scattered and scarce. School takes priority, I just need to buckle down and get some of this stuff done and off my plate before I can do what I actually enjoy- write for you! So hopefully you will stick by me as I try to keep posting. Just know there is a chance it wont be daily, the way I'd like. Just thought I'd let you know!

Thanks for sticking with me, promise this is only temporary!

Butch Walker Streams New Album Online

Hey Everyone!

Just a quick note for all the Butch Walker fans out there. He and his current band, The Black Widows, have just posted the new album for full streaming online! Thats right, you can check out the full album by clicking HERE. Eleven new tracks in all, and the Itunes purchases will be available with a few rare tracks and B-Sides.

 

There are also a few interesting packages available for purchase... specifically package four. For a mere $25,000USD, you can "spend a weekend in Butch's spare bedroom, collaborating on a song that will appear on his new album and play the song live on stage together during his next tour"... all that and a signed limited edition vinyl + more... not bad haha. Something Corporate Back In The Studio!

Hey Everyone!

Exciting news, Something Corporate are officially back in the studio! I'm thrilled, I loved these guys when I was in high school, so a reunion tour would be killer.

This news follows not long after the announcement for Bamboozle Left in California which the guys will be headlining. The group went on hiatus shortly after the release of their last album North. The band members each went off to their own projects. Perhaps most notably, Andrew McMahon's very successful solo effort- Jack's Mannequin.

So what do you think of the possibility of new something corporate tracks???

Grammys 2010: Butch Walker Steals The Show! (at least I thought so haha)

Hey Everyone!

So the other night I was watching the Grammys as I do every year... dont ask why because honestly, I dont even know why I do it haha. Anyways, Taylor Swift performed so I un-muted the TV to get a listen so I could have some valid commentary... and I'm glad I did. Despite not being the worlds best vocalist (and she knows this- but she IS a fantastic writer and musician so kudos to her!) she put on a great show. Her medley was well done, and it involved a couple key players. For one, the absolutely stunning and super talented Stevie Nicks (oh yeah- it happened) and the equally brilliant... BUTCH WALKER?! How many of you noticed him up there? Be honest!

My roommate will vouch for me, he caught my eye immediately but I couldnt put my finger on why. I was taken with this guy, he was just SO into his performance... with a banjolin of all things! That takes guts and non-chalence if you ask me haha. Not anyone can pull that off. Anyways, he was generally in the back of the frame everytime but there was just something that had my attention. And suddenly, when HIS version of You Belong With Me began to play, and the light shone enough to make those tattoos stand out against his skin, I had a eureka! moment.... no word of a lie, I actually let out a "OH MY GOD- BUTCH WALKER. THATS WHO THAT IS, I KNEW HE WAS FAMILIAR!" which made my roommate snap out of her Farmville trance and try to figure out what I was going on about haha.

Anyways, if you missed it, check it out below and keep your eyes peeled for that eccentric banjolin player on your left haha. As much as Stevie and Taylor are great, Butch is the underrated genius here. Lets give him some attention. If you dont wanna watch the whole thing, it starts around the 3:57 mark. Enjoy!

21 Guns Re-Released With Cast Of New York Musical

Hey Everyone!
So not long after their performance (which was great ps.) at the Grammy Awards last night, Green Day officially released their new video for 21 Guns featuring the cast of their New York bound broadway musical. The video is very simple, it just shows the recording process in a kind of raw, fun way. You see the band interacting with the cast as they all watch this dream come to life. Its pretty cool. I love the way the guys watch the cast sing and you can just see it in their eyes... its like, "yeah, this is it, this is exactly how we imagined it".

Its also kind of interesting the way this song takes on a new life. On one hand, you have a softer side of Green Day. A rock ballad. And on the other hand, you have this musical epic. The cast brings a whole new dimension to the song... I dont care if its "punk" or not to make your music into a musical, when it works it works. Thats really all there is to it haha. And this? DEFINITELY works.

There is so much emotion in this short little ballad. The way the band comes in with them, its phenomenal. You can tell that this isnt about making a quick buck, the guys put a lot of thought into this production. The interactions with the cast make that pretty evident- they're friends. So for everyone who saw this as a move to make a big profit, I have to disagree. They are already loaded... 20+ years in the music industry, and 16 years of hits will do that for you. Not to mention, they started it in a little Berkely theatre... not in some huge NY production. It just did well so Broadway made sense.

And otherwise, here's the Grammy performance! Beautiful. Seriously, I am oddly overwhelmed by this version of the song with the cast... its just a stunning arrangement.

Personally, I will be buying tickets for New York once I figure out my exam schedule. Who wants to come with?
